Gruaud Larose reaches record high

By November 15, 2013Bordeaux, Regions

The Bordeaux market may be struggling, but there are certain wines whose performance has belied market conditions. At the end of October the Gruaud Larose index reached a record high. It has climbed 5.9% year-to-date, in contrast to the Bordeaux 500 Index’s year-to-date gain of 2.8%.

Gruaud Larose sits in the Left Bank 200 Index within the wider Bordeaux 500. As shown below, over a five year period Gruard Larose has outperformed the Bordeaux 500, gaining 42.5% compared with the latter’s gain of 34.5%.

But the rise really began in Spring 2010, with the release of the 2009. Parker awarded the vintage 95 points, and it has reminded the market that Gruaud Larose is a Second Growth capable of producing legendary wines – such as the 1928, 1945, 1961, 1982, 1986 and 1990. With 2009 the greatest vintage produced in 19 years, is Gruaud Larose back?
