Over the last fifteen years, the quality of Lafite and
Latour’s wines has been remarkably consistent, changing very little across
vintages (as shown below). Given this, we would expect the price trajectory
that Lafite follows: older vintages rise
in price as supply diminishes. Latour therefore looks a little odd: it would
seem that as the chateau has withdrawn from the market, so has it squeezed
prices.
In recent years Mouton, Margaux and Haut Brion have made
great strides, and now match Lafite and Latour on scores. In fact, one has gone
a step further. Having produced perfect wines in 2009 and 2010, Haut Brion’s recent
vintages are now ahead of the pack. And with these costing an average of £4,225
per 12×75, they are incidentally also the most affordable.
