What’s in (half) a point?

Back in July we examined the effect of a 100 point rating on
a wine’s prices (in that example, Montrose 2009
vs Montrose 2010
).  Today we are
looking at this for two First Growths, both of which seem to have found a
level. Yet while 100 point Latour 2009 (above) finds buyers when it is around
£10,000 per 12×75, 99+ point Lafite 2009 (below) – described as ‘unquestionably
profound’ by Parker – has been trading at £7,000 per 12×75.

As shown in the chart below, at the height of Lafite’s
popularity the 2009 traded at a premium of 7%. Today it is at a 30% discount.
