Each year Liv-ex surveys
the international wine trade upon their return from tasting the new Bordeaux
vintage. The survey is designed to track the consensus of opinion amongst the
best professional tasters of young Bordeaux and is open to all Liv-ex trading
members – over 420 of the world's largest buyers and sellers of fine wine.
This year's survey includes
questions on vintage quality, vintage comparison, the top wines and the most
disappointing wines of 2012. A summary of the findings will be published on the blog as soon as responses have been collated.
To make it worth their while,
we are offering a bottle of J L Chave, Hermitage 1989 to the participant that
provides the closest estimate of the actual release prices of our basket of
wines in question nine. We ask this question every year, and below you can see how
actual release prices have compared to our members’ predictions.
For the 2008s, 2009s and
2010s our members underestimated the price – quite drastically so in the case
of the 2009s, where on average release prices were 32% more expensive than
anticipated. Last year’s predictions for the 2011s reflect a shift in attitude,
with Liv-ex members expecting high prices. Although Liv-ex members
overestimated, many in the trade still felt that the eventual 2011 release
prices were not low enough.
