In the Cellar Watch July Market Report we examined the percentage gains and losses since the beginning of 2012 for the 50 wines in the Liv-ex Bordeaux 500.
The full results are shown in the table below, with the wines ranked in order. Wines on the left of the table have made a gain, and wines on the right have experienced a loss. Only 11 wines are seeing year to date increases. The affordable Clos Fourtet is the top performer, its 2009 (L-WIN 1008339) a 100-point perfect wine, while critics’ high scores of Pontet Canet’s most recent vintages have lifted sales of its earlier wines.
None of those making a gain this year are First Growths, which are all in the lower half of the 50 and frequently the hardest hit. Latour is the best performer with a 4% loss, placing it at no.27. Haut Brion is at no.35, Mouton at no.38, Margaux at no.40, and Lafite at no.49.
The market’s indifference to Lafite has left both it and its second wine suffering the most severe decline, with vintages of Carruades down almost 20% in price overall.
