First Growth releases fail to spark trade

Mouton 2011 was released this morning at €360 per bottle ex-negociant. This translates to a London release of £3,800 per case, making the wine £1,100 more than the 2001 and around £1,000 more than the 2004. (See the Liv-ex En Primeur Pages for the latest prices and scores.)

Though four of the five First Growths have been released, Lafite is the only Premier Cru that has seen active trade on Liv-ex. With an opening price of £5,300 per case, the estate's 2011 replaced the 2004 as the most affordable vintage available. But the other First Growths have not followed Lafite's lead. Their 2011s are considerably more expensive than other recent vintages and seem to offer limited value for money. Will Latour provide some much-needed respite?
