Masseto – the (very) super Tuscan

By March 23, 2012Italy, Regions

Over the last few months, the exchange has seen increased interest in  Masseto, thought by many to be the finest of the Super Tuscans.  Around 3,000 cases  of Masseto are produced by the Ornellaia estate each year,  with the 2006, 2007 and 2008 all trading at new highs over the last two months.  The critically-acclaimed 2006 (99 points from multiple sources) has seen particularly keen demand recently (+44% over 6 months to £1,241 per three pack).

In terms of pricing, Masetto is stretching its lead over stable-mate Ornellaia and rival Sassicaia, and moving up into the realms of the Bordeaux First Growths, with a base-lines pricing of around £2,400 per case. The 2006 vintage of Masseto (described by James Suckling as "full throttle and super sexy") is even surpassing them,  with only Lafite costing more (see below).

Interestingly, Suckling rates the 2008 vintage 2006's equal, also awarding it 99 points and describing it as "one of the greatest Massetos ever". The 2008 is currently trading on Liv-ex at around £650 per 3x75cl case –  just over half the price of the 2006.
