Like fellow Super Tuscans Ornellaia and Sassicaia, Antinori's Solaia and Tignanello are attracting considerable trade this year. Intimidating First Growth prices seem to be tempting buyers to dip into top Italian wines, which offer strong scores and relative value for money. And though increased trade has not translated into price movement for Solaia, recent vintages of Tignanello are up an average of 15 per cent year on year. As a result, the historical price gap between the wines is receding and Solaia is now just over double the price (an average of £1,430 per 12x75cl case).
The table below shows the prices and Wine Spectator scores of both labels. Although Solaia continues to receive higher scores from the critics, a number of Tignanello vintages with similar ratings seem disproportionately cheaper. The 2004, for example, boasts 95 points from the Wine Spectator but is £450 cheaper than Solaia's 96-point '04 and almost half of the price of its 95-point '03.
