In June 2010, we compared the prices of Italy's most prominent Super Tuscans: Ornellaia and Sassicaia. Back then, Sassicaia was marginally more expensive than its neighbour, having benefited from a swell in demand in the first half of 2010. This year, however, the tide has turned and Ornellaia has sailed ahead.
After dragging its feet for much of 2010, the last 12 months have seen prices for Ornellaia 1998 to 2007 increase by an average of 16 per cent. As a result, the wines have all surpassed £1,000 per case and are trading at an average of £1, 317, compared to £1,234 for the same vintages of Sassicaia.
Ornellaia 2005 has gained the most ground (+43 per cent), followed by the 2000 (+27 per cent), which is currently offered on Liv-ex at £650 per six. And with the majority of high-scoring vintages trading at upwards of £1,300 per case, buyers may want to take stock of the 95-point 2006, which is available at £1,200.
