Duhart Milon: lower-scoring vintages more expensive than 09?

By November 23, 2010Bordeaux, Fine Wine Market, Regions

In recent weeks, the last five vintages of Duhart Milon have seen a flurry of trade on the exchange, resulting in sharp price increases. And though it is, perhaps, no surprise that the vintages that were most affordable last month have gained the most ground (namely the 06 and 07), what is more startling is the fact that they are now a touch more expensive than the top-scoring 2009.

The 2007, which received 90 points from Parker, has seen the greatest price appreciation over the past few months, having doubled in value since June. The wine traded at a new high of £1,040 per 12x75cl case on Sunday, up from £777 on the 2nd of November (+34%). The 2005 (RP 94), 2006 (RP 92) and 2008 (RP 93-95) have also seen fierce demand and have all increased in value by more than 20% over the past month. As a result, all four vintages are now trading at above £1,040 per case, whilst the 09 (RP 94-96) is available at just under £1,000 - despite Parker’s claim that it is “the finest Duhart Milon yet made.”

This rather surprising price vs points disparity is another clear indicator that Asian buyers (who are no doubt responsible for these steep price rises) are brand rather than vintage conscious. Inferior 09 prices also reflect China’s preference for vintages that are physically available, with the 08 seeing increasing interest as it approaches physical release.

The chart below shows the current prices of Duhart Milon vintages 2005-2009.
