Liv-ex was founded by two stockbrokers, James Miles and Justin Gibbs, who had the idea to build an online stock exchange for wine. They took their vision to the London Wine Trade Fair in 2000, along with an eye catching Jeroboam of Mouton Rothschild, and launched the business.

The introduction of the Internet made an electronic marketplace viable for a niche market like fine wine, bringing a fragmented industry together in one place and offering the potential to make wine trading significantly more transparent, efficient and safe for everyone’s benefit.

Liv-ex today

Since 2000, membership has grown significantly. Liv-ex now has over 620 customers in 47 countriesWith the help of its members, Liv-ex continues to obsess about making the wine market more transparent efficient and safe and removing barriers to trade.

Looking to the future

Liv-ex continues to seek to remove barriers to trade by designing and applying new standards and innovations in collaboration with its customers. These innovations have secured industry awards for four consecutive yearsbut Liv-ex’s role and values remain firmly rooted.

“Liv-ex (London International Vintners Exchange) is no different from any other exchange. It provides an independent meeting place where its members – bound by a common profession – can come together to find out what is happening in their market and identify opportunities for profit.”
