As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux 2022 has been released at €265 per bottle ex-négociant, up 10.4% on the 2021 release (€240).

It is being offered by the international trade for £3,180 per 12×75, a 10.4% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£2,880 a case).

Chateau Margaux will be introducing a 2nd white wine this year, which has not been named yet.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine 90-92 points. He questioned whether ‘it is missing the vigor of the previous vintage’ and notes it ‘lacks the complexity of the best whites from this First Growth’.

James Suckling awarded the wine a barrel range of 99-100 points, calling it a ‘powerful white with superb density’ and ‘one for the cellar’.

Jane Anson scored it 96 points, commenting on the ‘nuance and lift’ of the wine.

Fair Value analysis

There is no significant correlation between Pavillon Blanc Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.

Based on the chart above, buyers looking for value in back vintages might want to consider the 2019 vintage. It received 94 points from Neal Martin (Vinous) and is available at a 38.6% discount to the 2022.

The 2016 and 2017 vintages received 93 and 92 points from Neal Martin respectively and are available at discounts of 32.1% and 38.9% to today’s release.
