Recent trading activity

Bordeaux accounted for 31.1% of total trade in the first five days of October, with the market remaining fixed on highly rated vintages such as the 2019, 2016 and 2010.

Château La Gaffelière 2019, Château Léoville Poyferré 2019 and Château Léoville Las Cases 2016 and 1999 being among the top-traded wines.

Burgundy accounted for 20.9% of trade over the same period, narrowly ahead of Champagne’s 19.8% share. California took a 7.0% share, and Piedmont edged out Tuscany with a 7.3% share compared to the latter’s 6.4%.

Buyers look to confirmed classics

As noted in the recent update of the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000, the Bordeaux Legends 40 had its best monthly performance so far this year in September.

It rose 3.1%, just behind the surging Champagne 50 which was up 3.2%. Recent Sterling weakness and continuing economic gloom had buyers looking for both opportunity and security.

For US Dollar buyers, fine wine prices have dipped (dramatically so, for those quick footed enough) providing an opportunity to add great wines from classic vintages to a portfolio.

Although not entirely without risk in times of extreme financial volatility, blue-chip Bordeaux with bottle age can be trusted to hold its value far better than the more abundant recent releases.

The chart above shows the 10 best-performing wines from the Bordeaux Legends 40 last month.

The long-term nature of Bordeaux price appreciation and general lack of volatility are strong qualities in uncertain times. They may also be contributing factors behind the current trend towards the best vintages in Bordeaux at present.
