As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Pape Clement Blanc 2021 has been released at €96 per bottle ex-négociant, up 8.1% on the 2020’s opening price.  

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,163 per 12×75. There are back vintages that look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.  

Critics’ scores 

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine a barrel range of 91-93 points and observed that ‘it should age well in bottle’.  

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded it a slightly higher score of 93-95 and called it ‘promising’.   

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) gave it 92-94 points. She said: ‘Light-bodied, the palate has wonderful tension and loads of tightly wound citrus and tropical layers, finishing long and minerally’.   

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) awarded it 93-94, observing that ‘the 2021 Pape Clément Blanc shows the tension and cut that this vintage could bring to dry white Bordeaux’. 

Jane Anson rated it 94-points.   

Fair Value analysis 

Prices for Pape Clement Blanc are 89% correlated to age. Using Liv-ex’s Fair Value methodology, today’s opening price comes at a premium to last year’s release.  

Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2014 and 2013 vintages. Both are currently available at a discount to today’s release and have several additional years in bottle.  

The 2014 vintage was also awarded a higher score from Neal Martin of 94 points. In his tasting note, he said that it ‘just builds in the mouth towards a very confidence, sophisticated, tensile finish’ and added that it was ‘superb’.
