Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine a barrel range of 91-93 points. In his tasting note, he commented that ‘it is a completely diametrically opposite style to the previous vintages, partly a result of Michel Rolland handing the reins over to his right-hand man, Julien Vilaud, who has always had a different winemaking philosophy’.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded it a slightly higher score of 92-94.5 points. He noted that it was ‘tightly wound’ but imagined it ‘will come around at some point’.

James Suckling observed that ‘Pape made a very finely crafted and elegant wine this vintage’, scoring it 94-95 points. Meanwhile, William Kelley (Wine Advocate) and Jane Anson noted its use of extraction, awarding 91-94 and 93 points respectively.

Fair Value analysis

Prices for Pape Clement are 65% correlated to age. Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2014 vintage, which is available at a 11% discount to today’s release and offers bottle age.

The 2014 vintage was also awarded a higher score from Neal Martin of 94 points. In his tasting note, he said that it ‘just builds in the mouth towards a very confidence, sophisticated, tensile finish’ and added that it was ‘superb’.

The 2019 vintage also looks attractive. It boasts 96-points from Martin and is available at the same price as the 2014.

The 2021 Le Clementin de Pape Clement Rouge has also been released at €21.60 per bottle ex-négociant and it is being offered for £262 per 12×75.
