Cardinale 2018 has been released for €180 per bottle ex-négociant, an increase of 9% on the 2017’s initial offer (€165).
The wine is being offered internationally for £711 per case (3×75). At £2,844 for a case of 12 bottles, the 2018 is 38% more expensive than the current Market Price of the 2017 – £2,048 (12×75).
Critical opinion
The wine’s best scores came from Jeb Dunnuck and Lisa Perrotti-Brown who both awarded it 98-points.
Dunnuck said it had a, “layered, singular character” that, “builds slowly with time in the glass”. Perrotti-Brown said that it, “prances out of the glass with gregarious notions of warm cassis, black cherries and wild blueberries… finishing long with a skip in its step”.
James Suckling rated it 97-points saying it had a, “juicy sophistication and flavourful profile”.
Fair value
At its current release price, the 2018 is by far the most expensive vintage of Cardinale available today. Cardinale often struggles to maintain its high opening prices in the secondary market.
It is one of the best-rated of recent vintages, however the 2012 and 2014 both have 98-point scores from The Wine Advocate and Market Prices of under £2,000 (12×75).
The 2016 with 97-points is another vintage offering value among back vintages.
