- Best performing wines so far in 2021 show the continued broadening of the market.
- Champagne tops the list of risers.
Prices for all fine wine regions, as represented by the Liv-ex indices, have been on the rise this year. No surprise then that the top performers year-to-date are a diverse bunch.
In the pink
A rosé Champagne tops the list of movers in the first half of the year. Louis Roederer’s Cristal Rosé 2008 has enjoyed a 35% rise in value over the past six months. This comes as global demand for Champagne soars – and notably for pink bubbles.
Year-to-date, value trade for rosé Champagne is three times higher than the previous three-year average. Rosé Champagne is also outperforming its parent index, the Champagne 50.
Other Champagnes also appear on the list of movers. Cristal 2008 follows in second place, up 34%. Salon 2006 comes fifth with a rise of 27%.
Italian stallions
Italy is another region well-represented by two Super Tuscans – Masseto 2009 and Tignanello 2016. Yet the Italy 100 index has somewhat lagged behind the other regional indices over the past six months, rising just 3.2% after a strong 2020.
The best performing index over the past six months has been the Bordeaux 500. Top movers from Bordeaux included Vieux Château Certan 2011 and Cheval Blanc 1998.
The Rhône – long overlooked but offering excellent value for money and now second-best performer year-to-date – has been pushed by Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2015, up 12.5%.
