La Gaffelière 2020 En Primeur: “intriguing”

  • The wine is being offered for £600 (12×75) SEP.
  • “A magnificent prospect,” says Neal Martin.
  • The 2020 has the highest Benchmark Critic score but not the highest price.

La Gaffeliere

The 2020 Château La Gaffelière has been released for €48 per bottle ex-négociant, up 17.6% on the 2019 release.

The international trade is offering the wine for £600 per 12×75, 5.6% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

Today’s release offers good value for money but buyers can find older vintages with slightly lower Benchmark Critic scores available for less. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical opinion

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded today’s release a barrel range of 96-98 points – his highest score for the château. He said it had “perhaps the most satin-like texture I have encountered on a young La Gaffelière”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) gave it the same range as Martin and noted that the wine “shimmers with compelling energy”.

James Suckling rated it 96-97 and described it as “really impressive”.

The wine also received 95 points from Jane Anson (Decanter) and 94-96 from Falstaff.

Fair Value

Today’s release looks to offer Fair Value and is priced below vintages like 2018, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2005 despite boasting a higher Benchmark Critic Score.

Alternatively, buyers might wish to look back at last year’s release or the 2016 vintage (NM 93) available for 10% less.
