Issan 2020 En Primeur: “a sophisticated Margaux”
PREMIUM
CONTENT

  • “A jewel of a wine,” according to Antonio Galloni.
  • The wine is offered internationally for £506 (12×75).
  • Vintages that carry the same score such as the 2016 might offer better value for money.

The 2020 Château d’Issan has been released for €42 per bottle ex-négociant, up 20.7% on the 2019 release.

The international trade is offering the wine for £506 per 12×75, 15.5% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

The 2020 is the first vintage that incorporates Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec in the blend. Similarly scored vintages like the 2015, 2016 and 2019 are currently available in the market for less. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical opinion

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded today’s release 93-95 points. He said that “this is a sophisticated Margaux in the making, full of breeding and class”.

The wine received the same barrel range from Antonio Galloni, who observed that “Issan is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine”.

James Suckling gave it 97-98, commenting that it is, “rich but not heavy”.

Jane Anson (Decanter) rated it 96-points and described it as “a sinewy, powerful and forward-moving wine with a sense of momentum”.

Fair Value

There are currently back vintages of d’Issan like the 2015, 2016 and 2019 that carry 94-points from Neal Martin, but which cost less than today’s release.

However, prices for d’Issan are more influenced by age than by score. The 2011 also looks attractive (NM 90) and is available for £410 per case.

Other releases

Blason d’Issan 2020 has also been released for €15.6 per bottle ex-négociant, equal to the 2019 release.
