  • “Magnificent from the very first taste,” says Antonio Galloni.
  • The wine has been released internationally at £1,152 (12×75).
  • Last year’s release offers good value for money.

The 2020 Château Haut-Bailly has been released for €96 per bottle ex-négociant, up 45.5% on the 2019 release.

The wine is being offered by the international trade for £1,152 per 12×75, 37.1% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

Production volumes are reportedly down 25% on 2019. Last year’s release offers good value for money with 97-points from Neal Martin. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical opinion

The 2020 Haut-Bailly topped James Suckling’s list of Bordeaux 2020 wines. Awarding it a barrel range of 99-100 points, he praised its “incredible power and drive” and “harmony and balance”.

The wine received 95-97 points from Vinous critics Neal Martin and Antonio Galloni. Martin said that “this is an impressive Haut-Bailly to coincide with their new winery”.

Galloni called it “deep, rich and explosive” and observed that “yields are down 25% from 2019, and that richness comes through loud and clear”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) gave it 96-98+ and Jane Anson (Decanter) 96-points.

Anson found it “less exuberant than the 2018 or 2019, making this a vintage that suits the style of Haut-Bailly”. She further noted its “strong potential for up-scoring when in bottle”.

Fair Value

The last wine from Haut-Bailly to hold a score of 96-points from the Benchmark Critic was the 2005, and by that measure the 2020 may look appealing.

Nonetheless, last year’s release carries the highest Benchmark Critic score and looks compelling at £840 per case.

Buyers looking for an older vintage might consider looking back to the 2005, which carries a similar score and price tag as the 2020.

The 2015 is another good value option, with 95-points from Martin and at £890 per 12×75.

Other releases

Haut-Bailly II 2020 was also released for €26.4 per bottle ex-négociant and is being offered internationally for £318 per 12×75.
