- “Endowed with impressive precision,” according to Neal Martin.
- The wine is being offered for £653 (12×75) SEP.
- The 2016 presents a good in-bottle alternative but costs 9.3% more.
The 2020 Château Canon la Gaffelière has been released for €54 per bottle ex-négociant, up 9.8% on the 2019 release.
The international trade is offering the wine for £653 per 12×75, 5.2% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.
Both this and last year’s release look well-positioned with 94-points from our Benchmark Critic Neal Martin. The 2016 presents an alternative, carrying the same score but at a slightly higher price.
Critical opinion
Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 93-95 points. “Packed to the rafters with vim and vigour, this is a superb Saint-Émilion,” he said.
Antonio Galloni gave it (94-96)+ but cautioned that “readers should plan on being patient, as the 2020 is going to need years to come around”. He noted, however, that “the 2020 appears to have significant potential down the line”.
“It’s a thrilling Saint-Emilion readers should snatch up,” said Jeb Dunnuck. Dunnuck and Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) gave out the highest scores to the 2020 Canon Gaffelière – a range of 95-97.
James Suckling scored it 95-96 and Jane Anson (Decanter) 94-points.
Fair Value
All 94-point vintages that are already available in-bottle (2005, 2015, 2016) are available at a slightly higher price than today’s release, making it look like a compelling offer. The 2019 is currently the most affordable alternative with this same score.
The 2014, with 92-points from Neal Martin, is available at 8.9% discount and also looks attractive.
