Canon 2020 En Primeur: “an exhilarating triumph”
PREMIUM
CONTENT

  • “The best since the benchmark 2015/2016 vintages,” says Neal Martin.
  • The wine is released internationally at £1,152 (12×75).
  • The 2020 offers a compelling alternative to the 2015 which carries the same Benchmark Critic score.

The 2020 Château Canon has been released for €96 per bottle ex-négociant, up 37.9% on the 2019 release.

The wine is being offered by the international trade for £1,152 per 12×75, 29.4% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

Volumes are reportedly down 15% on last year.

The new release also offers better value for money than the 2015 vintage, which carries the same score of 97-points from Neal Martin. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical opinion

The 2020 Canon received 96-98 points from Neal Martin (Vinous), who said the château, “nailed it this year”. Martin explained that the wine had “one of those bouquets that stops the clock thanks to its breath-taking delineation and focus”, while “the palate possesses exquisite definition”.

Antonio Galloni awarded 95-97 points and described it as “an especially airy, understated Canon”.

James Suckling gave it 97-99 points and asked if this “exceptional” Canon might be the, “best of the trilogy?”.

Both Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) and Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) found potential for perfection in the 2020 Canon, rating it 98-100 points.

Perrotti-Brown called it “an exhilarating triumph!”

Fair Value

The 2020 offers good value for money when compared to the highly scored 2015 vintage.

It does, however, sit above a number of recent vintages like the 2017 and 2014, that both look attractive with 95-points from Neal Martin and costing just over £600 a case each.
