Extended analysis: En Primeur reports

The Liv-ex extended reports provide an in-depth overview of the market for Bordeaux En Primeur.

Every year, Liv-ex publishes two reports assessing the new vintage campaign – initially available exclusively to members. The first explores the position of the Bordeaux market prior to the campaign and the quality and quantity of the vintage to be released, while the second evaluates the outcome of the campaign’s events.

Our En Primeur 2020 opening report, Bordeaux 2020: A sense of déjà vu, is now available to read and download.

Key findings include:

  • Critical assessments will be vital to the success of the campaign, with release prices predicted to rise, but should not obscure the delicate position of Bordeaux in the wider market.
  • Initial indications suggest potential for high quality-wines, but 2020 appears to be a heterogenous vintage.
  • High temperatures in the growing season affected volumes, making the 2020 crop smaller than 10-year average.
  • With on-going stock retention practices and the possibility of bad frost damage in the region, the number of cases released this year could shrink further.
  • The trade should expect a small, fast-paced campaign, likely to happen in late May-June.

You can access our critic scores grid which compares the latest 2020 scores from a range of key Bordeaux wine critics. The table will be updated as the campaign unfolds. Most critics are expected to release their in-depth reports by the end of May.

Determining the right price: ‘Fair Value’ methodology

Liv-ex ‘Fair Value’ methodology helps in determining the right price for a given wine.

The methodology uses regression analysis to measure the relationship between price and quality and establish the fair price of a wine based on its critic score and vintages already available in the market.

This is how we will be assessing the Bordeaux 2020 release prices and highlighting any pricing anomalies in the secondary market. As a measure of quality, we have re-introduced our ‘Benchmark Critic’, comprising the scores of Robert Parker (vintages 2005-2012) and Neal Martin (vintages 2013-2020). You can find the latest update on our methodology and the logic behind ‘Benchmark Critic’, here.

Fair Value Analysis Tool (Liv-ex members only)

Liv-ex members on a Silver package or higher can see real-time prices for all Bordeaux wines on our Fair Value analysis tool.

The dashboard allows you to view the Bordeaux En Primeur 2020 charts from our blogs in real-time and in multiple currencies: GBP (12×75), EUR (1×75) and USD (1×75). You can also filter between your favourite critics and see historical release prices all in one place.

The tool also includes a ‘Fair Value’ chart that indicates whether the price for a wine sits above or below the value implied by the trend line. The age of a wine can be used as a substitute for scores where age is more important.
