The first series of James Lawther MW’s Bordeaux 2019 scores were published on JancisRobinson.com this morning. Lawther will be providing his overall vintage impressions in another update after tasting the wines of the Left Bank next week.
Jancis Robinson refused to accept En Primeur samples this year, for reasons outlined in this article.
As seen in the table above, Figeac is Lawther’s top-scoring wine, described as “a classic Figeac in its elegance and restraint. Gets the nod over 2015 and 2018 and at least on a par with 2016”. Lawther’s tasting note also reveals that the wine ABV level is 14.1% – thus making it exempt from the 25% US tariffs.
Lawther was also full of praise for Angelus, which was released earlier today at €230 per bottle ex-negociant, down 8.7% on the 2018 release (€252). He called it “the most refined Angélus I think I’ve ever tasted.”
Another of today’s releases, Cheval Blanc, received 18 points from Lawther, who noted that this is “a super Cheval Blanc but 2018 may just have the edge”.
