New Indices Explorer: Understand which wines are driving market trends

From today, Liv-ex members have a new market analysis tool to help them analyse and visualise the market, and spot trading opportunities faster.

Indices Explorer allows you to dig into the data behind our indices so that you can find which wines are driving market trends. Members can explore the most-traded wines using the industry benchmark index, the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100, or the regional indices of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Italy and others. Rank the component wines by their price performance to spot opportunities before trading them.

It is one of three analysis tools available to Liv-ex members, who can use Indices Explorer here. The tools are powered by new APIs that allow members to present similar charts on their own websites.

About Liv-ex Indices

Liv-ex indices define the fine wine market: the Liv-ex 100 index, found on Bloomberg terminals, launched in December 2003 and was then backdated to July 2001. In its first two decades, it has increased 272.4%, survived three global financial crises, and returned more than the S&P 500.

All our indices are calculated using the Liv-ex Mid Price. The Mid Price, which is based on merchant transactions, is the most robust measure for pricing wines available in the market. It is calculated by finding the midpoint between the current highest bid price and lowest offer price. These prices are truly independent. They are firm commitments from merchants on Liv-ex; the most liquid fine wine marketplace. Each price is then verified by our valuation committee to ensure that the number is robust after considering all data at our disposal, including merchant offer prices and historical Liv-ex transaction prices.
