  • Despite the difficult market conditions surrounding the campaign, the 2019 Bordeaux vintage has been by far the most successful of the last three Bordeaux releases since they were offered.
  • Lafite has been the most sought-after label from these three vintages, with four wines in the top 10.

En Primeur 2020 is nearing.

We’ve posted our opening report on the campaign, initial critic scores are being published, and there has been a shift in trade towards Bordeaux; just check the past two weeks of regional trade share, where Bordeaux has accounted for 45%-50% of trade by value.

Relative success in Bordeaux

Each of the last three campaigns have been beset by various potential setbacks. The 2017 vintage was hit by bad frosts, the 2018 vintage was without Neal Martin tasting at primeurs, and the 2019 vintage released amid multiple market headwinds, not least of which was the global pandemic.

Nevertheless, of the three, it was the 2019 vintage that proved the most popular on release; helped by prices that were down 21% on average from the 2018s.

Top traded EP wines

Looking at trade by value in these wines before their physical release, eight of the top 10 come from the 2019 vintage; proving how much more interest there has been in these wines since their release compared to the 2017s and 2018s.

The top traded wine to date from these three campaigns, however, is Château Lafite Rothschild’s 2018, which saw increased activity after the estate announced last year that the wine would be released in commemorative bottles to mark its 150th anniversary.

Lafite has proved the most successful label overall across these three releases, its grand vin from the 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages featuring in the top 10, as well as the 2019 vintage of second wine Carruades de Lafite.

The table above shows the top 10 wines traded by value from the last three campaigns, along with their UK release prices and current Market Prices. Eight of the top 10 wines have seen positive price performances, with Angelus 2019 and Pape Clement 2019 lagging.
