Penfolds Grange 2016 has been released at £4,140 per 12×75, an equivalent release price to the 2015 vintage – which has drifted roughly 10% since. Along with Grange comes a number of other wines including Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2018, released at £900 per 12×75.
Today’s release of Grange was scored 99 points by Joe Czerwinski of RobertParker.com. He noted the wine was “impressively concentrated and full-bodied, with an extraordinarily long, velvety finish”. He suggests the 2016 is “on par with such vintages as 2010 and 2012”.
James Suckling awarded the wine 98 points saying it “really is exceptionally complete, but tight, needs time to open. Very enjoyable now, but better after 2023”. This aligns with the more conservative side of Penfolds drinking window which they described could be up to 43 years, between 2022 to 2065.
Nick Stock, executive editor for JamesSuckling.com and one of the first to taste the 2020 collection outside the Penfolds team described this collection as, “one of the strongest Penfolds showings we’ve seen in recent times”.
At this current price point the 2016 sits above a number of recent vintages, trailing marginally the perfectly scored 2013 and 2007. One may look to the 2010 and 2012 vintages for relative value as they carry equivalent scores to today’s release and are available at a 10% discount.
