Decanter reported today that all Lafite 2008 bottles and magnums will feature the Chinese symbol for the figure eight "in celebration of the First Growth's new vineyard venture in China." Vineyard venture or not, the figure eight, also known as the symbol of infinity, is a powerful symbol in China – one that is said to bring eternal blessings and good luck. According to Decanter, "a spokesperson for Lafite owner Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) said she did not know what impact the move might have on the value of Lafite 2008 in China."
The vintage, which bears a potentially perfect score of 98-100 from Robert Parker, has seen keen trade since the announcement and changed hands today at a new high of £8,850 per 12x75cl case – up from £8,300 last month. The wine is currently bid on the exchange at over £9,000. Is "lucky" Lafite 08 set for some spectacular price rises?
