CONTENT

  • The 2020 Lafleur is available for £6,320 per 12×75 (£1,580 per 3×75).
  • The wine has received near-top marks from Jane Anson (98) and James Lawther MW (19)
  • The price is up on 2019’s release but still only half the cost of the 2019’s current Market Price.

The Guinaudeau has released its stable of 2020 wines En Primeur. The headline release is Château Lafleur, which is being offered by the international trade for £6,320 per dozen.

This is up 9% on the price of the 2019 on release. That wine’s Market Price, however, has risen 106% to around £12,000 per 12 bottles since last summer.

The 2020 release, therefore, looks extremely good value versus recent releases.

Critical opinion

Only those critics who could make it to the estate have scored the wine. Jane Anson (Decanter) rated it 98. She said: “I was, to be honest, a little unsure of how the gravels here would react to the dry summer but the first hit of graphite and smoky berry fruit makes it clear Lafleur has taken the vintage in its stride.”

James Lawther MW (JancisRobinson.com) scored it a 19 saying it had “drive and persistence” as well as “excellent ageing potential”.

Jean-Marc Quarin likewise gave it a score of 98 and Falstaff magazine rated it 98-100.

Fair Value

The 2020 sits at a significant discount to the 2019 and 2018 vintages, both of which have risen in excess of 100% in price since their respective releases.

According to the ‘Fair Value’ methodology, a score of 95-96 from benchmark critic Neal Martin would place it below the regression line, and therefore indicate this release is well-priced.

Those buyers looking for fair value among back vintages might consider the 2014 and 2017 vintages. The former has a score of 95-points from Neal Martin and is under £5,000 a dozen, while the latter with 97-points from Martin and is closely priced to today’s release.

Other releases

Alongside the grand vin of Lafleur were the 2020 vintages of ‘Les Pensees’ (£1,360 12×75) and ‘Les Perrieres’ (£570 12×75).

Other wines from the same stable include Grand Village Rouge (£146 12×75), Les Champs Libres (£570 12×75) and Grand Village Blanc (£167 12×75).
