  • The number of distinct Burgundian wines traded in 2021 so far is 92% higher than in the same period in 2020.
  • The average market price of Burgundy is less than in 2020 but its market share by value as a region is climbing.
  • German, Italian and US wine regions are also seeing more wines trading for the first time this year.

Burgundy boom

Burgundy has seen a boom in the number of distinct wines traded in the first four months of 2021 – a 92.6% increase from the same period in 2020.

Across the overall market, of the almost 550 wines (and some spirits) that have traded for the first time ever in 2021, nearly 40% of them are from Burgundy.

The broadening market for Burgundy was recently examined on the News & Insights page after a record number of distinct Burgundian wines traded in March.

New corners to explore

The average market price of those of these new Burgundian wines trading is nearly half of that of the average 12×75 trade price of Burgundy wines in 2020.

Yet even with new wines trading carrying a lower market price, Burgundy has seen a rise in market share by value due to its rise in volume. Year-to-date Burgundy has taken a 21.4% market share by value, up from 17.9% in 2020 and 7.8% back in 2016.

Although the broadening of the market into different areas of the world is an established trend, one should not overlook the expansion of the secondary market into new corners of classic regions.

Growing market share

The chart above shows the complete breakdown of where the new distinct wines traded in 2021 are coming from.

Outside of Burgundy, there are no other dominant regions, but the Mosel, Piedmont, California, and Tuscany have all seen an increase in new wines trading.

The segment of the chart marked ‘other regions’, covers wines from almost 30 regions around the world. This includes wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia, Port, Beaujolais, Marlborough, Puglia, Alsace, Victoria, the Nahe and Niederösterreich among many others.
