Clinet 2018 released – “solid as a rock”

By May 2, 2019Bordeaux 2018

Clinet 2018 has been released at €64 per bottle ex-negociant, up 14.5% on the 2017 release (€56), but down 11% on the 2016. It is being offered by the international trade for £768 per 12×75, up 11.3% on the 2017 release of £690 per case.

The volume of stock coming to market is down 15% on last year.

Overall, critical reception for this year’s Clinet has been positive. Lisa Perotti-Brown (Wine Advocate) described the wine as being “chock-full of bright, energetic fruit” and scored it 94 points.

James Suckling said that “it grows and grows on the palate” and added that it was “solid as a rock”. He scored it a barrel range of 95-96 points.

Jane Anson (Decanter) was also full of praise. She awarded the wine 97 points and said it was “one of the star Pomerol names showing us how it’s done in 2018”.

Prices for Clinet are 91% correlated to critic scores. Depending on your critic of choice, today’s release is coming to the market either slightly above (Lisa Perrotti-Brown) or slightly below (James Suckling) the line implied by our ‘fair value’ methodology.

Buyers looking for other options may wish to consider the 2016 vintage. It was scored 96+ points by Neal Martin back in January and is available at a small premium to today’s release.
