Pontet Canet 2016: extravagant

Pontet Canet 2016

Pontet Canet 2016 has been released at €108 per bottle ex-negociant, up 44% on 2015 (€75). It is being offered by the international trade for £1,370 per 12×75. This is 72% higher than the open price of the 2015 (£795).

With this price tag, the wine is more expensive than all other recent vintages except for the 2009 and 2010.

As the chart below shows, prices and points (WA) for Pontet Canet are very highly correlated (97%). Today’s release price positions it firmly above the trend line, suggesting that it is likely to be a difficult sell.

Critics have heaped praise on the quality of the wine. Chris Kissack awarded it a potentially perfect 98-100 points, suggesting that it might be the best Pontet Canet ever. Neal Martin, who scored it 95-97, called it “an extravagant Pauillac”.

It certainly has a price tag to match.
