Conseillante 2016 released

Conseillante 2016 has been released at €150 per bottle ex-negociant, up 32.7% on 2015 (€113). It is being offered by the international trade at £1,860 per case, a 52.2% increase in sterling terms on the 2015 release price of £1,230 per 12×75.

James Suckling was effusive in his praise of this year’s vintage, awarding a score of 99-100 points, he called the wine “the greatest Conseillante in modern times.” Neal Martin, who gave a score of 96-98 points, was also impressed, noting that “this is a classic La Conseillante and the best since the majestic 2010.”

Prices for Conseillante are correlated to critic scores (Wine Advocate). Today’s offering is entering the market as the most expensive recent vintage of Conseillante, marginally above 2005, and 15% above the price suggested by Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology. Followers of Neal Martin might question whether it is worth paying a premium for this wine above the 2010, which has a comparable score, age in bottle and is his “benchmark” for Conseillante. Alternatively, buyers looking for value might be interested in the 2012, which carries the same Wine Advocate score as the 2010, yet is available at a 43.6% discount.
