Saint Pierre 2020 En Primeur: “gorgeous balance of power”

  • The wine is available for £462 (12×75) SEP.
  • Antonio Galloni said it was “a jewel” and an “early favourite”.
  • With its current Benchmark Critic score there is value in multiple physical vintages.

Château Saint Pierre 2020 has been released En Primeur for €38.40 per bottle ex-négociant, up 14% on the 2019’s opening price.

The wine is being offered by the international trade for £462 per case, 9.5% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

The release seems to be a little high according to the Fair Value methodology, leaving many back vintages looking more favourable buying options. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical Opinion

The majority of critical reviews have been positive. Antonio Galloni scored it 93-95, commenting that it was “shaping up to be a jewel of a wine” and “one of my early favourites in this vintage”.

Jane Anson rated it 94-points, commenting on its “gorgeous balance of power”. James Suckling scored it 95-96 and Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW 94-96.

Fair Value

Today’s release does not look Fair Value based on its current score from Benchmark Critic, Neal Martin.

He rated the wine 92-94 and called it “very classy”. Nonetheless, he added that if he had one reservation, “it maybe doesn’t finish with the fireworks that I have noticed on other recent superlative vintages”.

If this character develops in bottle, however, he added that “it will warrant a higher score”. The potential for a promotion, therefore.

Until that happens, buyers might be persuaded on the strength of other reviews that this is a good buy.

Those looking for opportunities in back vintages, however, have many options. The 95-point (NM) 2019 is nearly 10% less expensive. The 2015, 2016 and 2018 are also all 95-points and slightly less expensive versus today’s release.

The 2014 and 2017 meanwhile have the same score as the 2020 and are both significantly cheaper; by 37% and 20% respectively.
