LIVE opportunities: Champagne trade breaks the January lull

In recent years, Champagne has succumbed to a January lull.

Trade traditionally gathers pace during the final three months of the year, with festive celebrations in full swing but after the New Year, the region historically loses some of its shine (and market share).

This year told a different story.

The chart below shows Champagne’s market share by value in January 2021 compared to the value of trade done in Q4 of the previous year.

In January 2019 and 2020 there were large declines in activity. But in 2021, Champagne trade was nearly as robust as it was during the holiday season.

This is a testament to the LIVE exposure of Champagne (total value of bids and offers) that has held near the all-time high set in November of last year.

As a reminder, the Champagne 50 has also been the best performing Liv-ex 1000 sub-index over the past year – up 8.76%.

The 2008 vintage remains a firm favourite but the 2012 vintage has climbed through the ranks to become the second most traded vintage by value and volume.

All LIVE activity for 2008 and 2012 can be found below – additionally there are £3.6m of LIVE opportunities spread across the whole region.
