The thirteenth edition of the Liv-ex Power 100 – the annual list of the most powerful brands in the fine wine market – was published in the December edition of The Drinks Business.
We use four criteria to determine a brand’s rank: year on year price performance, trading performance on Liv-ex (value and volume traded), the number of different wines and vintages traded, and the average market price.
There are 22 new entrants this year – brands that did not rank in the top 100 in 2017. They come predominantly from France (Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone), with four wines from Italy (three from Piedmonte and one from Tuscany).
Leroy, which occupies the top spot, is perhaps the most exciting newcomer. The brand topped the price performance list after achieving a 58% rise on average.* It has been helped by a methodology adjustment this year, which combines domaines and maisons under one brand. Without this change, the brand would not be a new entrant, but would still have made a significant climb from 85th last year. Faiveley has also benefitted from our updated methodology.
Two Champagnes – Pol Roger and Perrier Jouet – also entered this year’s rankings due to their high volumes of trade and strong price performance. The former was largely boosted by higher trade prices for its top cuvee, Sir Winston Churchill.
As we observed in our December Market Report, brands from Piedmonte have also been on the move. Bruno Giacosa has made its highest ever appearance in the Power 100, jumping from 132nd place to 56th. Following the death of the Barolo producer, the brand has yielded an average price increase of 17%. Produttori Barbaresco also made in into the top 100 after rising by almost 31%. Luciano Sandrone, in 95th place, was up 18%.
