European Buyers Became Key Market Support Following US Retreat
Following the withdrawal of US buyers in early-mid 2025 (a consequence of Trump’s tariff threats), prices fell quickly. Before, US buyers were able to purchase at higher levels while maintaining margins, propping levels up. Now, European buyers, perhaps finding value at these new lows, stepped up their purchasing.
Central European Buyers Increase Purchasing Share from 10% to 35%
Over the past three years, Central European buyers (mainly from Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany & the Czech Republic) have accounted for an expanding share of European purchasing. Their share of purchases by value increased from 10% in 2023 to 35% today, while France’s share declined from 75% to 55%.
European Buyers Buy Closest to Market Price After the US
Though US buyers are the most competitive segment, EU buyers follow close behind, consistently purchasing closer to Market Price than the overall average. On the other hand, EU members sell significantly below the market average.
