Recent trading activity 

Trade this weekend focused on Bordeaux, which took 44.6% of the market by value. It was largely driven by the 2019 vintage. However, some of the most active wines by value were Château Angélus 2010 and Château Lafite Rothschild 2005

Burgundy trade also increased from last week, particularly for its 2018 and 2020 vintages. On Friday, we released our latest report on Burgundy’s 2021 vintage and the state of the region’s secondary market. 

Other wines that enjoyed demand included Promontory 2015 and Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2013

Opus One leads Californian wine trade 

Opus One has been the most traded Californian wine by both value and volume year-to-date. Between 2020 and 2022, its secondary market trade by value more than doubled.  

During this period, Opus One has been the second-best performing Californian wine, up 34.0%, outdone only by Ridge Monte Bello, up 51.3%. Opus One has also outperformed its parental index, the California 50, which has risen 29.8% since the end of 2019.  

Opus One 2018, which has risen 15.9% in value since release, has been leading trade. It is followed by the 2019 vintage, which was released in September last year.  

Opus One 2018 trades on Liv-ex 

Prices for Opus One are 70% correlated to age. As the chart below shows, vintages that might offer value include the 2012, 2011 and 2010

Of the last ten vintages available in the market, the 2012 is the lowest priced Opus One. Last week it set a new trading high of £3,200 per 12×75, an increase of 77.8% on its release price.
