  • Pavillon Rouge 2021 has been released at £1,656 per 12×75.
  • Neal Martin scored the wine 90-92 points
  • The 2014 and 2019 vintages might offer better value for money

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Pavillon Rouge 2021 has been released at €138 per bottle ex-négociant, equal to the 2020’s opening price.

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,656 per 12×75. The 2014 and 2019 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored this year’s Pavillon Rouge a barrel range of 90-92 points. He added that it was ‘rounded and fleshy to the point that you could almost run down the famous driveway and drink a bottle.’

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded a slightly higher range of 91-93 points, and said that it was ‘an absolute delight to taste’. He also added that its ‘soaring aromatic top notes add allure, making it impossible to resist a second taste’.

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) also gave it a barrel range of 91-93 points, while Jane Anson scored it 92 points.

Fair Value analysis

Today’s opening price comes at the same price as the 2020 vintage. However, buyers looking for value might be interested in the 2019 vintage, which is available for a 3% discount but falls in the upper end of Neal Martin’s barrel range for the 2021 (92 points).

The 2014 vintage also looks attractive. With 92 points from Neal Martin and several years in bottle, it is available for the same price as today’s release.
