Antonio Galloni has released his latest reviews for the 2018 and 2019 releases (and one or two other vintages) from Chianti Classico for Vinous.

In his review he explores each vintage, noting that the best wines from 2018 in particular are “absolutely gorgeous”. The 2019s, meanwhile, have “exceptional balance” and “soar with aromatic intensity”.

He also wades deeper into the arguments for and against the “Gran Selezione” classification that the region introduced a few years ago.

Scores

Two of the most notable wines among his scores were Mazzei’s Castello di Fonterutoli “Siepi” 2019 and Antinori’s Tenuta Tignanello “Solaia” 2018.

Both received high scores, 99 and 98 respectively. Galloni noted that the Siepi was a “total knock-out”, while the Solaia “continues to develop beautifully”.

The two highest-scoring wines, however, both with 100-points, were Fontodi’s Flaccianello della Pieve 2018 and Castello dei Rampolla’s D’Alceo 2017.

Galloni said he “loved” the Flaccianello della Pieve, which “exudes vibrancy, energy and class from start to finish”, while the D’Alceo “possesses mind-blowing intensity and pedigree to burn. In a word: epic”.
