Gazin 2020 En Primeur: “Best of the trilogy?”

  • “Really fantastic”, according to James Suckling.
  • The wine is being offered for £673 (12×75) SEP.
  • The 2012 presents a compelling in-bottle alternative.

Gazin

The 2020 Château Gazin has been released for €56 per bottle ex-négociant, up 11.1% on the 2019 release.

The international trade is offering the wine for £673 per 12×75, 6.8% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

Other similarly-scored vintages that look attractive include the 2019 (NM 95), 2016 (NM 94) and 2012 (NM 95), available in the market for less.

Critical opinion

This is a “classic Pomerol through and through”, according to Neal Martin (Vinous), who gave today’s release 93-95 points. Martin revealed that the 2020 Gazin 2020 contains no Cabernet Franc this year and complimented its “wonderful bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and pressed iris petal scents […] that really whisks you down to Pomerol”.

Jeb Dunnuck also described the wine as a “quintessential Pomerol”. He said that “it shines for its purity and elegance and is just a classy, thrilling wine”. Dunnuck gave it a slightly higher barrel range of 94-96 points.

James Suckling was most effusive in his praise, awarding the wine 96-97 points. He questioned whether the 2020 Gazin wasn’t “the best of the trilogy” and said this was “really fantastic with so much intensity and focus”.

The wine also received 94-points from Jane Anson (Decanter) and 92-94 from Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate).

Fair Value

Today’s release is coming to the market at the same price level and with the same score as the 2018.

The 2016, another 94-point Neal Martin wine, is available for 12.9% less.

The 2012, however, seems to offer the best relative value for money. It carries a higher Benchmark Critic score (NM 95) and is available for £575 per case.
