Batailley 2020 En Primeur – “seamless”

  • The wine is being offered for £337 (12×75) SEP.
  • “Classically structured and seamless”, according to James Suckling.
  • Priced at the same level as the 2019, 95-points from Neal Martin would make this good value for money.

Batailley

The 2020 Château Batailley has been released for €26.5 per bottle ex-négociant, up 3.9% on the 2019 release.

The international trade is offering the wine for £337 per 12×75, just 0.3% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.

With one of the smallest increases so far in this En Primeur campaign, Batailley has real potential to stand out as great value for money – especially if it receives 95-points or above from Neal Martin.

Critical reception

“Still relative value”, according to James Lawther MW (JancisRobinson.com), who gave the 2020 Batailley 17-points. He described it as “solid, subdued and distinctly Pauillac”.

Today’s release received a barrel range of 94-95 points from James Suckling. Suckling complimented its “wonderful finish of extremely polished tannins” and said that there was “so much blackcurrant, spice and cedar”.

Jane Anson (Decanter) rated it 94-points, and Jeff Leve (Wine Cellar Insider) 93-95.

Fair Value

At this price level, today’s release compares favourably to previous vintages. The 2019 currently carries the highest Benchmark Critic score, however, and is available at £336 per case.

Neal Martin’s Bordeaux 2020 scores are due next week. Will the 2020 offer the same value as last year’s release?
