Joseph Phelps Insignia 2017 has been released at €144 per bottle ex-négociant, down 2.7% on last year’s release (€148). The wine is being offered by the international trade at £1,920 per 12×75, equivalent to the 2016 opening price.

The Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown awarded the wine a barrel range of (93-95)+. In her tasting note, she commented the wine is “very promising”, adding “it burst from the glass with bold scents of baked black plums, crème de cassis and fruit cake”. Joseph Phelps winemaker, Ashley Hepsworth, said this would be the rarest offering of Insignia in 20 years and Lisa adds that only 7,500 cases were made – approximately half of normal production.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous scored the wine twice, awarding a range of (91-94) on both occasions. He described the wine as “dark, sumptuous and enveloping in feel, with a real sense of breadth and textural resonance”.

James Suckling gave a 93-94.

The wine comes to the market priced above a number of recent vintages. The 2016 vintage, which has drifted from its UK release looks to offer relative value with a critic score of 99 points. Also, the 2014 vintage, awarded 97 points is the cheapest available on the market.
