Bordeaux 2018: En Primeur report coming

Next week, Liv-ex will be releasing an in-depth report on the development of the Bordeaux market and this year’s upcoming Bordeaux 2018 En Primeur campaign.

The analysis will put Bordeaux in the context of a broadening fine wine market and will further consider the geopolitical and region-specific factors that will shape sentiment around the 2018 release. It will also draw on a recent harvest report by Gavin Quinney, which you can read in full, here.

Bordeaux 500 and Ex-chateaux index vs. Average Wine Advocate scores

As the chart above shows, En Primeur release prices do not move in line with the market but are instead influenced by the overall quality of the vintage. Using Wine Advocate’s scores as a proxy, there is a marked difference between the release prices of critically acclaimed and less successful vintages, with those for 2007 and 2013 at less than half the price of the ‘great’ 2009 and 2010. En Primeur prices thus cannot be predicted solely by the direction of the Bordeaux 500 index but rather by looking at production and quality changes.
