  • Liv-ex 1000 gains 0.8% in August
  • Bordeaux trade share falls to 48.8%
  • Carruades Lafite 2016 the most active wine
  • New releases from La Place de Bordeaux
  • Petrus valued at €1 billion

All of Liv-ex’s indices rose in August. The Liv-ex 1000 led the way, gaining 0.8% due to all the sub-indices making gains apart the Italy 100, which fell by 2.06%.

Even as trade has returned to normal at the end of the summer, a record low level of First Growths activity at just 7.9% of total trade, pushed Bordeaux’s market share down to 48.8%.

Market activity shifted towards new releases from La Place, in particular, Opus One 2015 and Masseto 2015, which lifted the USA and Italy’s market shares to 10.6% (up 9.5%) and 7% (up 2.9%), respectively.

Rhone’s market share also rose drastically – up from 3.8% to 12.2% last week. Roger Sabon, Chateauneuf Du Pape Secret 2016 traded heavily after Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 99 points.

A stronger pound pushed the Liv-ex 50 down 0.4% to close on Thursday at 358.75.

For the second time in three weeks, Carruades Lafite 2016 was the most active wine by value.  The last trade price of £2,680 per 12×75 represents a 67.5% increase from the EP release price.

New releases

Each September, La Place de Bordeaux releases new vintages of a selection of the most highly regarded wines from the USA, Italy and Chile and the Rhone. This week, Masseto 2015 and Opus One 2015 were launched. Masseto last traded at £5,600 per 12×75, a 14.2% increase on the release of £4,900.

Petrus

As per The Drinks Business, Alejandro Santo Domingo, a Colombian-American investor, bought 20% of Chateau Petrus for €200 million, valuing the estate at €1 billion. On a per hectare basis, this ranks as ‘the most expensive price ever paid in Bordeaux’ at €87 million/hectare. In 2011,  Liv-ex valued the great estates of Bordeaux, estimating that Petrus was worth €662,798,160, thus occupying 6th place in our classification.
