Forts Latour 2009 ex-Chateau released

By September 11, 2018Bordeaux, Fine Wine Market, Releases

Forts Latour 2009 has been re-released ex-Chateau today at €195 per bottle ex-negociant, an increase of 119.1% from the initial En Primeur release price. It originally came out at €89 p/b in April 2010 during the China-led boom.

Today’s release is expected to be offered to collectors at around £2,400 per 12×75. This represents a 20.6% premium on the wine’s current Market Price of £1,990. It last traded on Liv-ex at £1,865.

Today’s release is thus higher than its last trade price due to provenance; the chateau’s team had previously stated that by controlling the storage themselves, they could guarantee the wine’s quality.

The price of Forts Latour 2009 has varied significantly since release, following the trends of the broader market. Its trade price peaked at £2,175 in March 2011 and hit a low of £1,100 in April 2015.

Latour opted out of the En Primeur system in 2012, deciding to release wines only when they felt the vintages were ready.

Robert Parker had previously described the 2009 as “possibly the best second wine ever made” at the property. However, when he rated it 95 points in 2011, he also noted that “this beauty will be at its finest in several years”. Neal Martin awarded it 93 points at a blind tasting in 2013.

Buyers might alternatively be attracted by the higher-scored 2010 vintage (97 points by Robert Parker), which is currently available at a 16.6% discount (£2,000) to today’s release.

Back in March, Liv-ex covered a spotlight on the first wine, Latour, discussing its history and price performance. To read the post, please click here.
