Beaucastel, Hommage J Perrin 2016 has been released at €270 per bottle ex-negociant, up 14.9% on the 2015 release price (€235). It is being offered by the international trade at £3,400 per 12×75, an increase of 13.3% on the 2015 in sterling terms (£3,000).

The volume of stock coming to market is down 7% on last year, largely due to reduced production.

The 2016 vintage has met a very positive response from critics. The Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski awarded the wine 99+ points, admitting it is a ‘super wine’ – ‘creamy, lush, intense and long’ – that might need to stay ‘in bottle a bit longer’.

Historically, Jeb Dunnuck has been reviewing Beaucastel, Hommage J Perrin for Parker’s Wine Advocate. This year, he praised the 2016 on his independent website, calling it ‘a heavenly, perfect wine that is going to live for 30-50 years’. He rated it the ideal 100 points.

At this opening price, Beaucastel, Hommage J Perrin 2016 is slightly above the price implied by Liv-ex’s fair value methodology, based solely on the Wine Advocate scores.

Followers of Jeb Dunnuck may disagree and see the value in collecting a potentially 100-point wine. Had his rating been applied to the chart above, the 2016 would fall below the fair value line, making it an even more attractive vintage for score-conscious buyers.

Nonetheless, both the 2009 and the 2012, which Dunnuck scored 99 points, are available at a discounted price to today’s release.
