Almaviva 2016 released – a tale of ‘classicism’

Almaviva 2016 has been released at €87 per bottle ex-negociant, up 11.5% on the 2015 release price (€78). It is being offered by the international trade at £1,116 per 12×75, an increase of 16.2% on the 2015 release price of £960 in sterling terms.

James Suckling awarded the 2016 vintage 97 points, describing it as ‘very fine and elegant’.  Unlike its full-bodied predecessor, the 2015, which Suckling scored 100 points, today’s release is a medium-to-full-bodied blend that displays ‘light cedar’ and ‘savory’ undertones.

As the chart above shows, Almaviva 2016 is priced at a similar level to other recent vintages in the market. The 2008 and 2009 offer bottle age at the same price point, while ratings-conscious buyers might alternatively look to the 2015.

Almaviva, owned by Concha y Toro and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, ranks among the ‘second growths’ of the world, according to the 2017 Liv-ex Classification. In February, Liv-ex interviewed its Commercial Director Francisco Zilleruelo, who explained how Almaviva  continues to demonstrate ‘excellence to all its markets’. In the 2016’s vintage, the emphasis lies on ‘classicism’.
