Lafite ’98: How much will it cost you to drink like a French football star?

By July 17, 2018Bordeaux

Chateau Lafite Rothschild has offered bottles of its 1998 Grand Vin to the French football team, according to its Instagram account and articles by Decanter and the drinks business

The estate posted: “The Lafite football team – and everyone here – celebrates you, just like we did in 1998. [French team], let us know if you’d like a bottle of ’98 Château Lafite Rothschild to celebrate – we’ve put a couple aside.”

The year is significant because it is the last time that France won the world cup – before Sunday.

The wine’s Market Price currently stands at £7,000 per 12×75, an 830% increase on its first recorded price in 1999. It peaked at £9,550 during the bull-run of 2011.

If the team accepts Lafite’s kind offer, players can look forward to a wine that, according to a recent Wine Advocate report by Lisa Perotti-Brown MW, has “tons of mouth-filling savory and plum preserves flavors and a very long, savory finish”. She scored it 96 points.

Très bien.
