By June 12, 2018Bordeaux 2017

Pontet Canet 2017 has been released at €80 per bottle ex-negociant, down 26% on the 2016 release of €108. It is being offered by the trade at £1,013 per 12×75, a decrease of 26% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £1,370 per case.

So far this campaign, Liv-ex members have been very successful at predicting release prices. Their estimates for Cos d’Estournel and Leoville Las Cases were within 2% of the actual release. They were further off for Pontet Canet, overestimating by 16% on average (€94.40).

Critical reception for this year’s Pontet Canet has been varied. Neal Martin awarded the wine 92-94 points but predicted that it would eventually land at the top end of this range.  His Vinous colleague Antonio Galloni commented that it “exudes class” and scored it 92-95.

The Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perotti-Brown MW was far more generous, awarding the wine 96-98 points. She noted that “it is deliciously savoury in the mouth, with wonderful freshness and spectacular energy”.

Prices for Pontet Canet are 85% correlated to score. Based on today’s release of £1,013 per 12×75, Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology places the 2017 above the trend line. However, like this morning’s Leoville Las Cases release, followers of Lisa Perotti-Brown MW may find more value in today’s release.

Buyers looking for back vintages, may wish to consider the prestigious 2005. With several years in bottle and 97 points from Neal Martin, the wine is available at a slight premium to today’s release. Several other vintages also look attractive.
